Gopal Vittal, the Managing Director and CEO of Airtel, revealed that the development of the spam detection system took a dedicated year of research and engineering. The AI solution operates through a dual-layer protection mechanism that filters calls and messages at both the network and IT systems levels. This innovative approach allows the system to analyze a multitude of variables, including call patterns and frequency, ensuring that spam detection is both swift and accurate.

With the capacity to process an astounding 1.5 billion messages and 2.5 billion calls daily—amounting to about 1 trillion records in real-time—this system’s analytics capabilities are undeniably impressive. The technology has already flagged around 100 million potential spam calls and identified 3 million suspicious SMS messages on a daily basis.

Airtel’s spam detection system goes beyond typical call screening. It also scrutinizes SMS content for harmful links, referring to a centralized database of blacklisted URLs. This dual-pronged approach not only minimizes the volume of spam reaching users’ devices but also shields them from possible fraud and phishing attempts—a growing concern in the digital age. Anomalies, such as unusual changes to a device’s IMEI number, which often signify fraudulent behavior, are also flagged, adding another layer of security for users.

Many have reported receiving calls from scammers masquerading as government officials, delivery services, or financial institutions.
