The Advantages and Drawbacks of Samyang’s Remaster Slim Autofocus Lens

Carrying around a camera bag full of heavy lenses can be a burden for photographers, especially when on the move. Changing lenses to capture different shots can be time-consuming and inconvenient, leading many photographers to seek a more efficient solution.

Introducing Samyang’s Remaster Slim Autofocus Lens

Samyang has developed a prime lens that aims to address the issue of cumbersome camera bags. The Remaster Slim lens allows photographers to change the focal length by swapping out optical elements within the lens, rather than swapping between multiple full prime lenses.

Prime lenses, which do not offer zoom capabilities, are known for delivering sharper images and a shallower depth of field. However, using prime lenses means photographers must physically move closer or further away from subjects to frame shots, or swap between different prime lenses with varying focal lengths.

The Innovative Design of the Remaster Slim Lens

The Remaster Slim lens features a smaller magnetic mount that houses the optical elements, making it easy to swap inserts quickly. Samyang offers three different inserts for the lens: a wider 21mm f/2.8, a 28mm f/3.5, and a 32mm f/3.5 designed for closer portrait photography.

While the Remaster Slim lens streamlines the process of changing focal lengths, there are tradeoffs to consider. Samyang claims that the lens offers a unique “analog sensibility,” reminiscent of old P&S film cameras. However, this may indicate that the lens produces softer results compared to other prime lenses on the market.

It’s important to note that the Remaster Slim lens is only compatible with Sony’s E-mount lens system. Initially available for pre-order in South Korea for around $229 USD, the lens quickly sold out. Shipping is expected to begin in early September, with broader availability in South Korea in early October. It remains to be seen when the lens will be available in other markets.

Samyang’s Remaster Slim Autofocus Lens offers a practical solution for photographers looking to simplify their gear without sacrificing versatility. While the lens may not provide the same level of sharpness as traditional prime lenses, its innovative design and compact size make it a compelling option for photographers seeking convenience and ease of use in their equipment.
